In 1970, the year Earth Day was first celebrated, Dakota County donated an Apple Valley parcel of land to the state. Eight years later, the Minnesota Zoo opened its doors on that land. Since then, more than 36 million guests have walked through the gates into a world of animals from all corners of Minnesota and across the world, award-winning exhibits, nationally recognized education programs, and leading conservation efforts.
